Treif is the Yiddish word for unclean or trash . . . Also used as the opposite of kosher in reference to what is edible or inedible according to Scripture.
In listening to the many discussions, opinions, interpretations, and debates as to whether everything is now all right to eat because of the discussion Messiah had with the Pharisees about hand washing . . . The context of that conversation had nothing whatsoever to do with swine, catfish, or shell fish.
Peter's dream in Acts 10 is also interpreted in the 11th chapter, as having nothing to do with animals, but rather not to call people unclean.
Here's the truth of the matter as to the flesh of unclean animals many people think is delicious. Seasonings, preservatives, and spices give the flavor people want, not the flesh of the animal, itself. Without sugar, maple, and smoke; bacon is a pile of belly fat from swine. On the other hand, the flavor that is so desired, is completely obtainable without the belly fat of swine, by adding sugar, maple, and smoke . . . Although I cannot verify this with experience, I'm guessing ham would not be considered edible without the preserving process that includes salt and spices
It is the spices in shrimp boil that makes boiled shrimp even seem palatable. Shrimp are the cockroaches of the sea, and that "vein" is the intestines. No amount of prayer or spice can cause shrimp feces to be food. The other way shrimp is eaten is fried. Even with all the spices it is boiled in or all the batter it is breaded in, it still requires a cocktail sauce with a base of ketchup. Where did anyone ever get the idea, past elementary school, that any good meat needs ketchup?
Then there's the delicious flavor of the bottom of the pond . . . There is not enough breading to mask the mud scent when catfish is frying. There is not enough onion in the hushpuppies or beer to wash down the scent of fried catfish, much less the flavor. When we consider all that must be added to this "so called meat" to even be able to eat it, we must realize it's not the meat the body wants, it's the spices.
When I can't grill fish, steaming it over a kettle of boiling water with "shrimp boil" is delicious! Included in this week's Delectably Kosher Section, is the recipe for biscuits and gravy without sausage.

Judge Orders Formula
Why would a judge order a woman to give formula to a baby who is healthy and doing well, breastfeeding? Who is to say when a child should be weaned? What is the point of weaning a child from the breast, only to introduce a bottle, if both mother and child are satisfied with breastfeeding? Many children have allergies and struggle with formula. Some natural health warnings have indicated, it's really not the wholesome food replacement, so many have been programmed to believe.
As it turns out in a custody case, the judge has ordered the mother to let the child stay with the father over night . . .
My thought here. Send the child with bottle of milk or whatever, pump while she's gone, and resume breast feeding when she returns to mom. Meanwhile, let the papa deal with a very, very dissatisfied little 10 month old for one week-end and I'm guessing he'll be asking the judge to rescind the "dry up" order.
It's bad enough that doctors intimidate mothers, but now we have judges making these sort of orders. Come on America, wake up!

McFoul!
Even if this contains no biohazardous material, shouldn't we really be more circumspect in what we feed our children? If this piece of breaded mystery does contain chicken the appearance is foul rather than fowl.

This is Not Food - Nuff Said
Do to copyright issues, I cannot even show the image to present the link. I have to admit, there are times I do crave chocolate and salt, but this seemed so outrageous, I Googled to make sure it wasn't a hoax. There is also a recipe for this "treat," if you want to try this at home.

What Would he Colonel Say?
Always with my ear to the ground for a new story, a friend of mine mentioned eating at KFC and made the comment that the honey isn't honey, anymore. Being the diligent journalist I am, and wanting to maintain the integrity of reporting true news, I went to the KFC nutrition PDF site. Sure enough, there is now "honey sauce." I've included the link below.
This is not to pick on KFC exclusively, as there have been many reports of fast food mystery ingredients, and KUDOS to KFC for publishing all this. I did find it interesting that the only three items on the menu that didn't have a list of ingredients was corn, lettuce, and tomatoes, but corn is no longer in it's created state, it just doesn't require labeling. I read that tomatoes were actually the first GMO experiment on record, and I didn't research the lettuce. I don't know the full history of commercial tomatoes, but the record stands pretty clear regarding corn.
As I read the ingredient lists for all the menu items, I was so saddened. I am old enough I remember the Colonel advertising his secret spices that made his chicken so good. Now the PDF indicates the original recipe is still a secret, but many of the ingredients listed also seem rather mysterious.

Second Generation
We all pretty much know, already what happens when anything becomes a second generation product. The quality changes. Throughout history, with technological advancements, the product has been enhanced. Also throughout history, often the bottom line becomes the focus and the quality is diminished.
Now we have second generation GMOs. Technology and money as the focus is not a promising combination in the area of food. When it comes to food, nutrition and sustainable integrity of the plant could be a great combination, but there is no indication that is the direction.
I would urge everyone reading this article to consider two things. GMO crops have yet to be proven to not be harmful and once a plant is genetically modified, it is forever changed, with indication, the GMO is dominant over unaltered plants. The other things to consider is the government food programs. Giving people just enough vouchers to purchase food that factory processed is not providing nutrition, either.
http://eatlocalgrown.com/article/11968-2nd-gen-gmos.html
We are quickly heading to the point of ingesting and consuming Non-food substances. There will be no nutritional value in that for our bodies, and we have no idea the damage non-food substances will do in our bodies that were intricately designed by our Creator.

Regulations for Feeding Swine
In my attempt to verify this information, I went to the USDA website, but it's closed right now over the shutdown.
Although the USDA allows growth hormone to be fed to beef and sheep, it forbids growth hormone in poultry and swine. There are numerous articles affirming arsenic added to poultry feed, as well as scientifically altering chickens, such as featherless, and increased sizes, but it's referred to as natural selection, not genetic modification.
I've noticed this on several sites and many grocery stores have obviously realized the value of "living high on the hog." Pork is filling the meat cases, as well as the recommendations from many natural websites, due to the stringent regulations.
Please keep in mind, regardless of regulation, what our Creator has called unclean, doesn't change with USDA regulation. On the other hand, we humans can bring filth to what YHWH has called clean.

OTC - Teething Medication
What are we giving our children?
http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/news/20110505/fda-warns-about-teething-medication
My granddaughter told me my little great granddaughter was teething and uncomfortable. She asked grandma if there was something natural I could come up with. I'm always up for a new challenge, but this was no ordinary request. I cannot stand to see babies uncomfortable, so I hit the Google to see what was in the commercial products.
The link above is frightening enough just with the main ingredient, but I also discovered dyes, chemicals I cannot pronounce, and saccharin, of all things . . . I have a rule of thumb, when it comes to chemicals that are difficult to pronounce or beyond my pronunciation skills. Anything that does not come out of my mouth, should not go in my mouth!

Serious Health Costs
I've heard people time after time speak of it just being too much trouble to cook for one, or they are too tired to go home from work and cook. So they eat out frequently or purchase deli food, which is filled with nitrites and preservatives. Eating out is becoming a health hazard unto itself.
Our food supply, even to prepare food at home, is not optimum, as we've reported; but ketchup, pickle slices, and onion bits on a double cheese burger do not count as vegetable servings. French fries are not a vegetable, and most beverages we refer to as juice are only fruit flavored. Flavoring is not the same as a portion of whatever it's flavored like.
I noticed on a ketchup bottle, just today, that it contains no high fructose corn syrup. That's wonderful, but tomatoes were the first of our produce, to be genetically engineered.
Many Americans now eat like teen-agers on a date, most days of the week. Few people take a lunch to work, as the Dollar menus really do make it so much cheaper and more convenient . . . but that doesn't really address the long term cost. Our health is diminished and our health costs have skyrocketed for two reasons. One, our diet is ridiculous. Second, we don't have to actually pay for our health problems out of our own pocket. Between fast food and convenience stores, many are living on Elvis food, but . . . the difference is, with health care provided, the personal cost doesn't have to be considered. Now you may say, but the cost to our health is personal. Yes it is, but few, very few do anything personally about that. The pharmaceutical profit margin proves that.
Most Americans will say they hardly go to the doctor, don't like to take medicine, and know they have unhealthy eating habits; but when it boils down to reality, they will schedule an appointment, even a surgery and take a prescription before they truly consider changing their lifestyle or diet.
Medicare requires more funding because senior citizens eat out much of the time, and often on their way home from yet another doctor appointment. Medicaid cannot cover the demand of the younger generation who live on fast food, have babies without spouses, and have been taught their eating habits by the folks who stop and get something on the way home from work, so they don't have to cook. The majority of the boomers have moved beyond a medicaid dependent household and not yet reached the medicare benefits, but when that happens, we will have an entire country doing what they want, eating what they want, while looking for a doctor to fix how they feel, and expect the bill to be covered by a program. I'm not for Obama's Health Care Bill, but I can see that something had to be done.
If the majority from toddlers to seniors are going to eat like teen-agers, somebody's got to make the grown up decision that pays for all this!

Chickening Out
I feel like I'm doing some sort of balancing act between sounding a warning and fearmongering. I see a horrible vicious cycle between a tainted food supply and increased health problems. This is where I will stand by the mantra of the Goshen Gazette and simply serve up links:

Comparative Pricing
Even before I was homesteading, I made it a rule to not purchase meat in discount chains. I worked in a family meat market years ago, and I knew the prices, quality, and seasonal fluctuation of the meat industry. That's not to say, I'm an expert, by any means, but I do know enough to realize prepackaged discount meat just never seemed to be a bargain, but more of a potential mystery.
Local grocery stores and meat markets on the other hand, and I realize they are a sparce presence in most communities, but these individual retailers do have rhyme and reason for their prices and their bargains. Some of the few of these that are left still get their beef in by the side, and break it down in the cutting room, so it's fresh, it's got a USDA quality stamp on it somewhere, and it goes on sale, when it needs to get moved out of the case. The best example I can give is preparing for a holiday. Usually quality steaks are in order for Father's Day, so the ground beef will be on sale, because customers wanted steaks that week-end, or steaks will be on sale after Memorial or Labor day, because burgers were the big purchase item that week-end. For those meat markets and stores that actually cut meat, the entire side needs to go in roughly the same amount of time. Then, there is also the seasonal cycle of availability in which the wholesale price fluctuates. Ranchers maintain breeding seasons, feed plans, and market cycles.
Now, back to the places that advertise "always low prices" in their meat department. Included is a link in which the blame is cast, the buck is past, and chances are six months after the date in question, most of it has already been consumed.
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/feb/09/aldi-100-percent-horsemeat-beef-products
Even though I do raise my own meat, I watch for the sales in the meat case, I know is supplied locally, after a big event or holiday week-end. I had the opportunity to chat with a young woman with small children, who made mention of the big box chain having better prices. We chatted for a moment about the very possibility that boxed meat and prepackaged products can be mislabeled. Even unintentionally, the damage is done, long before the error is caught.
Of course, in America, with all the redefining, perhaps some day in the future, horsemeat will be the new "beef." Gay used to mean happy!

Talkin' Treif
Treif is the Yiddish word for unclean, or not kosher. As the debate rages amongst Christians and Torah Observant believers as to the interpretation that Messiah died to cleanse pigs, catfish, and shrimp, I thought you might want to consider this perspective of clean and unclean . . .
This article says more and says it better than I could ever convey.

And the swine, because it divides the hoof, yet chews not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat: And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you. Deuteronomy 14:8-10
It is acknowledged in most religious circles that if Messiah lived or taught against the Word, He would have been a false Messiah.

Food Poisoning is Becoming Standard
Whether it is E. coli with beef, salmonella with chicken, now various poisonings reported in produce, we simply do not know where the next food poisoning scare is going to come from. There have also been canned food concerns along the way. I remember a peanut butter recall. I get particularly troubled on "food recalls." I'm thankful that they announce them, but I also know, food should not be compared to faulty machines. A recall on a vehicle, although it's assumed there has been a tragedy, is something that is easily identified and manageable as soon as it's reported. Food, on the other hand is not.
Just the fact that there are food recalls, tells me, we may not know about all of them. When buying a vehicle, appliance or a power tool, I realize there may be a problem in assembly, a faulty mechanism or just flat, every so often, a lemon; but food should be a different matter. Bad food, cannot be "repaired" or replaced so easily.
What this really has me wondering, since food poisoning is becoming so common place; is this. How many people are feeling achy or tired or nauseous, have a headache or a myriad of symptoms, but don't realize they've ingested something that was carrying some sort of bacteria? How many of these newly named syndromes and obscure symptoms could be caused by bad food or bad policy concerning the food. There are so many laws for organic farmers raising and selling food, but so few reports of illness caused by independent small ag. Perhaps the legislation being passed isn't really addressing the root of the problems at hand.

Water as a Commodity
The Department of Natural Resources is claiming some interesting authority and rights regarding water in this country. Seems our government considers water a natural resource, and I can agree with that much, but it would also seem our government believes it has the ownership of natural resources. I see natural resources more as a provision from our Creator, not a commodity to be regulated by our government.
There's more on the subject of water and don't think for a minute the bottle water has been just a convenience, it's part of the plan. Remember when the programming began that we needed to filter tap water? Then the bottled water started showing up everywhere.
The CEO of Nestle believes water should be like food and considered a commodity . . . I share his interview in the link below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEFL8ElXHaU
Although everyone should have access to clean water, not everyone makes that choice, and some have no choice.
Most in our country treat water as if there is an endless free supply of clean water, regardless of the way we manage it. Seems our government will make the choice based upon the usual variable of money, so I am expecting at some point that water will be treated as a commodity.
There are already two factors in place to indicate this direction. First, of course, the money backing the concept, and the fact that our government has declared water to be a natural resource, so there is already the DNR and conservation department for brown shirt enforcement!

The Fond Memory of Roastin' Ears
Natural, genetically unmodified roastin' ears are truly a part of American history. That's not to say there isn't a backyard garden somewhere with some heirloom seeds planted, but "they" say corn can cross pollinate up to two miles away. We do know much of our prepared food includes some sort of corn syrup or corn meal, and that corn is raised on a large scale corporate farm that plants modified seed to withstand all the herbicides and pesticides.
I remember when my grandchildren were small, the thought that crossed my mind as we prepared our evening meal. This would some day be just a memory. The thought didn't pertain to all of us fixing and cooking together, although they have long outgrown sitting on the counter and licking the beaters, but it was more of a prophetic knowing that some day we would no longer be enjoying that food we were eating. The thought was, the food would be changed.
At that time, the economic collapse was becoming obvious, I just figured some things in life would no longer be affordable or available by supply and demand, and then there was the whole gasoline issue. Well, as the times have continued to unfold, many of the factors in that thought have come to pass, but not exactly in the way I had first considered it. The food has certainly been changed.

Soy
Soy became "food" for capital gain. It's really that simple. Soy is a quick growing crop that can be planted after wheat is harvested. Scripture tells us not to plant two grains in one field, but that's Torah; so most choose to ignore it.
The truth about soy is yet to be fully discovered, but we do know it alters hormone levels. We also know it is the base in many hypo-allergenic baby formulas. This writer put those two pieces of information together and it immediately raised a question.
Could it be, that hormone levels are being altered on a very basic level, very early in life, thus causing issues for children to believe they were born with some specific hormone or gender issue? The information is certainly worth considering.

How Would You Like Your Steak?
Now that we are all alarmed about the integrity of our fruits and vegetables, let's consider what's going on with our meat supply. I'm not even going to enter the debate of kosher or not, as YHWH listed what He considers edible, which is enough said for me. What this article addresses is how old the product is and how it kept "looking fresh."
For all those who think news outside of mainstream is fear mongering or conspiracy theorists, I recommend giving it a bit more thought. We can't complain about knowing we are being misled by the media and then automatically label and reject the information that is outside mainstream.
http://worldtruth.tv/how-fresh-is-the-meat-you-eat/
We are being given enough information, even if we cannot come together in unity in faith or freedom, we may want to consider uniting in concern of our food supply. Messiah only had 12 disciples, one a traitor, and there were only 120 in the Upper Room, but there were 5000+ who understood a blessed food supply.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
The title of this article is an old cliche. Sayings become old cliches because they continue to be true sayings. So, rather than chance potential copyright issues, I'm just providing the link of comparative photographs of a week's groceries, in different countries. The comparisons are startling.

Ice Cream
Ecclesiastes tells us that knowledge doesn't always feel like a good thing and truthfully that is how this particular information sits. It just doesn't feel good to even consider this information. Upon discovering where "natural flavoring" for vanilla often comes from, this next bit of information really just kind of made my taste buds wither. That information is included in the Nonsanto section of the Goshen Gazette.
I come from a long line of folks who enjoy a cup of coffee in the evening with a dish of ice cream. I just cannot look at ice cream in the same way any more. There's just no reason for such greed and there is absolutely no excuse for misleading labels. There are still a few citizens are trying to trust the FDA!

I'll be making my ice cream at home, with whole raw milk and pure vanilla. Grandma's ice cream recipe is included in our Delectably Kosher section.

Do Not Eat Arsenic
We're just about to the point there should be a little skull and cross bones on our food!
Dressing chickens is not my favorite chore, but it seems preferable to eating poisoned ones. Years ago, I read about some chickens being fed arsenic to make them grow faster . . . but then they had a certain time frame in which they had to be processed or they'd die of the poisoning. That was before the days of the internet.
I've heard first hand of the experiments that go on here in Tyson/Con-Agri country. People talk of chickens that get so fat so quick, they can't bear their own weight. One man spoke of chickens that grew so quickly, they were ready to butcher at 7-8 weeks from hatching, but they had to be butchered before 9 weeks or they just began to, in his words, "fall apart." Now doesn't that just sound wonderful?
Most of us know better than to eat poison, but I'm going to suggest that we probably shouldn't eat food that has eaten poison, either!

Artificial Sweeteners - Not So Sweet
Artificial sweeteners are like "candy" for grown-ups, only it won't rot your teeth, it will rot so very much more!
I've been proclaiming the woes of aspartame for years now, and basically as with everything, people believe what they want to. I don't know that I've convinced anyone that it's bad for them, but my job is to simply share the information. What anyone does with it, is their choice. I know, I made the right choice for my health when I quit using it.
I was so far removed from the use of artificial sweeteners when splenda made it's debut, I never even tried it, at least intentionally, so I have included a link addressing splenda.
To replace sugar in our diet with chemicals does not enhance our health and truly doesn't make sense on a long term basis. First and foremost, our bodies are not designed to digest these strange chemical concoctions. Second, since our bodies do not process them, they either are stored in our fat cells, which directly opposes the reason for using artificial sweeteners. Reducing calories while expanding fat cells is counterproductive to weight loss, but can be actually hazardous to one's health. Third, they can be very damaging to the liver and kidneys as the body attempts to rid itself of these foreign substances.
Aspartame has the same basic properties as anti-freeze, although; the information continues to be downplayed. The original plan for aspartame was a medication for ulcers, when it was discovered to be very sweet. Artificial sweeteners are much easier to sell than pharmaceuticals. There is a much larger market. Aspartame has now been renamed to sound more natural.
Splenda, on the other hand was the result of an experiment to make an insecticide. Sucralose is several 100 times sweeter than sugar, and much easier to sell than insecticides. Not to mention, once again, the amazingly more vast market looking to cut a few calories over those looking to kill bugs. The best way to market a questionable product is to give it a splendid name and present it with splendor . . .
The only truly healthy way to reduce sugar in our diet is to reduce sugar in our diet. Artificial sweeteners seem to actually stimulate the desire for more sweetness, so the intake is actually increased. I won't actually use the term, addictive, but some folks have described the increased desire for diet beverages and even the urge to add artificial sweeteners to things they hadn't previously sweetened at all.
We can look around and see that artificial sweeteners have not solved the obesity epidemic. What we cannot see is what the artificial sweeteners may be causing.

Might As Well Burn It
Corn as we knew it is virtually extinct. There are still some hidden heirloom fields, but they are few and far between. GMO corn is now the norm, rather than the exception. I've even received updates and notes from various homesteaders and heirloom seed venders that the verification of heirloom corn is nearly impossible. There are still some hybrids that haven't been genetically engineered, yet, but they are also becoming an endangered species.
For those who still can't imagine summer without "roastin' ears" there's still time to get some seeds in the ground and hybrid seed corn is not a health issue, so . . .
When my Grandchildren were younger, I used to have a thought that I would dismiss quickly, but it was there none the less. I realized some of the things that we have taken for granted simply will no longer be available in their lifetime. It looks like grains are quickly becoming one of those items.
I used to be upset about the ethanol gasoline, even blogged about it a time or two. Corn was for food, not burning up and it causes all sorts of gummy problems in fuel lines, but considering the nutritional value of GMO grains, you might as well burn it.
It's not food any more!

Could This Have Anything to Do With So Many New Health Problems?
Poison calories lacking nutrients is what the article contained in the link seemed to be saying. The former description I had for the GMO grains and grain by-products now being offered was empty consumables, but I was wrong. These altered grains are not even filler, many are actually detrimental, even poisonous.
As I read the article linked above, I couldn't help but wonder about "restless leg syndrome" in the lack of potassium of GMO consumables. Then there's all this gluten sensitivity. Anyone who isn't living under a rock has got to be wondering about the increase in diabetes, obesity, and corn syrup in everything.
I've noticed two things as I've removed corn and most grain from my livestock feed, and gone to home grown vegetables and greens. First, even "organic" can be genetically altered, as the term organic is defined pretty broadly. Let me share about the difference in the animals, which I'm believing may translate to better health for me in the milk and eggs.
I gave no purchased grain through the breeding season last year. The kidding season this year resulted in a higher percentage of twins and doelings. Now this is just my first year of the experiment, but so far I like what I see. I also noticed the animals had healthier, thicker winter coats and the kids seemed to thrive much stronger even with the extended cold season. The next thing I've noticed is larger udders on the does. Even my miniature breeds appear to be in full milk supply continuously, and the kids have achieved rapid growth.
Chickens without corn has been an interesting experiment, but appears to be a rather successful one. Egg production is nearly 100% daily which is the greatest egg production, so far. In the past, egg production was probably 70% of the flock per day. I don't yet know if this will have any effect on brooding, but I am watching and waiting.
Of course, I'm now hoping the apparent positive impact on the herd and flocks will be passed on through the milk and eggs in higher vitamins and nutritional value. Realizing the GMO crops are not just empty calories, but detrimental toxins, they should no longer even be considered food.

Some Juice isn't Juice Any More . . .
That isn't to say it's all gone, but much of the trusted labeling has changed. Some well known names are not sporting the "100% Juice" on it's packaging. So, they are being honest in their advertising, but they are no longer delivering a good and healthy product. For long over 50 years we have depended upon frozen concentrate to be juice, not fizz free soda or expensive, embellished kool-aid. Much of the frozen concentrate is concentrated "fruit cocktail" or "fruit drink" it's . . . fruit flavored and colored corn syrup, just add water. We all know where corn syrup comes from!
I want to share an apparently little known fact. Even in it's unaltered state, corn is not a vegetable. Corn is a grain that was at one time a staple for the indigenous population of the Americas. Even if corn was a good source of vitamins, corn isn't corn anymore.

As for frozen concentrate with pictures of fruit on the label, some of them are still juice, but many of them are not juice anymore.
